Here, some spinach and bamboo shoots are added for color and flavor.Īs a child, I absolutely hated eating loofah (絲瓜). It is traditionally prepared with dark soy sauce, bits of shredded pork, mushrooms and Napa cabbage. There are different varieties of rice cakes on the menu, and while I like the “white” version with preserved mustard greens (雪菜), I love the Shanghai-style best. The boy has around 10 dishes he loves, and this ranks pretty high on that list.Īnother is Shanghai-style Rice Cakes (上海炒年糕). I make it at home, but it never comes out the same way because my stove just doesn’t emit the kind of heat required to stir-fry correctly. However, it is absolutely worth picking through the bones and devouring every little morsel of flesh you can find.ĭried Beancurd with Shredded Pork (香干炒肉丝) is an all-time favorite. It is not something you order unless you have four or more people, as it is quite the commitment. Rock Fish in Sweet and Sour Sauce is fried to perfection, and covered in sauce dotted with julienned bamboo shoots, wood ear fungus, scallions, onions and carrots. I do not have the prices for the dishes, nor do I have the exact English name of the dishes, however, it shouldn’t be a problem when ordering. This post combines dishes from both meals, some of dishes we eat on both visits. It is no surprise we both find the flavors here like a warm comfortable blanket, enveloping us on a slightly chilly night. It is also what my son remembers eating as a child because I have prepared it for him. This is my comfort food - the kind I remember my mother cooking. Therefore, I am very surprised - delighted in fact - that ever since our meal at Chef Chen, he has been bugging me about going back there. I believe our trip to Hong Kong a few years ago has developed an inner Chinese food snob in him. It is always difficult to convince my son to eat at a Chinese restaurant. But recently, on Chinese New Year’s day last month, I am sharing a meal with one of the most respected food writers in Orange County and this is where we end up ringing in the Year of the Goat. Corner Bakery CafeI remember quite vividly, the last time I’m here.I think I want the dough cut noodle again. I want to go back to try their dishes with rice. Portion was large, and the price was very reasonable. Everything we had at Chef Chen that night was good. Maybe it was the addition of shitake mushroom? We really enjoyed this plate of noodle. Chef Chen's version tasted more Taiwanese to me. Simply delicious! The flavor was different than the ones we had at Islamic Chinese restaurants. We just asked for combination, which has a bit of everything. There were options of chicken, beef, pork, shrimp, or vegetarian when ordering the dough cut noodle. Perfect for hangover! haha.) 什錦刀削麵 Combination Dough Cut Noodle ($6.99) We love dough cut noodle. (It was the day after crazy drinking at friends' wedding. It was exactly what I wanted, a bowl of good soupy hot noodle. It was SPICY, and we loved it! The beef was tender, but I liked the soft beef tendon even more. 牛肉麵 Beef Noodle Soup ($5.99) We asked for medium spicy for the Beef Noodle Soup. The spinach was delicious with the spicy sauce. We also like how there was a lot of blenched spinach under the wontons. When mixing the sauces together, it tasted really good. The wontons was drizzled with some slightly sweet thick soy sauce on the top, and the vinegary spicy sauce on the bottom of the plate was quite spicy. We were both feeling like having noodle that night. 紅油炒手 Spicy Wontons ($4.99) Besides regular Chinese dishes, Chef Chen also offers Northern Chinese style noodles and pastries.
